| You mix (Mix Engineering) SUPERBLY your albums by yourself, so here's my question, which album do you consider as the best concerning mix engineering? |

thanks, I still have a long way to go but feel happiest with foley room. it's a real hybrid mixed with a combination of analogue and digital gear and also from both vinyl and foley recordings.
thing is when you make a record purely from dirty old vinyl there has to be a degree of compromise in the quality of production because of the huge challenges involved in working that way. it's so much easier to get a clean sound from drum machines and synths for example but clean production isn't really what sampling's about I think. |

I do agree, the colors and texture on Foley Room are very good and it sounds very "unique", also the spacing and all those traitements ("Hey Blondie" for instance) on Ou From Out Where are excellent too....WOW !
I think that the mix engineering of Supermodified is different but very good too...looks like 70's mix engineering...I love it : )
Generally I think that the mix engineering for mainstream artists (radio) (excepted, Jazz and Cinematic mix) of our time is maybe, too clean, too much compressed = no depht, no acoustic situation ...I don't really like!
All the sound engineer works on the same way and because of that, listeners' ears are formated for that kind of mix engineering...
You have a personnal quality of sounds, congrats for that! |

Interesting post. I have a question from amon or anyone who might know about this ...
Is any mastering done for the albums after you mix them or all the aesthetic aspects of the records are taken care in the mix? (sorry but i'm not sure how to put it in english ) |

Not sure I understand your question but you take care of the texture, spacing (stereo image), single compression/EQ or hyper details with the mix and then you fix 'problems' (frequencies), beautify and the most important, you add coherence (colors, dynamic & volume mainly) between the whole tracks of an album during the mastering session.
Both mix & mastering sessions are very important. But the general aestheticism of a track/record comes from the mix though. |

I'm aware of the processes taken care in both mixing and mastering stages...
I wonder if there's anybody else aside from Amon Tobin handling the aesthetic and technic treatment of the the music once the mixing phase is done, you know...
The question goes something like this... i guess:
Is there another stage for the extra treatment as some sort of final process (after mixing) or there's actually the usual dynamics-color-level-blah blah treatment of a regular mastering stage and how involved do you get Amon as another is doing this dirty job?
cheers! |

ok sorry :) but your previous post was a bit messy!
I can't answer this! But I'm almost sure that Amon is behind the whole process nowadays. |

I think the same... his sound is very personal on each album, no one else get that sound so i'm guessing he is behind the hole thing. |
